Earth will react

The recent U.N. report on climate change (“U.N. Panel Issues Alert on Global Warming,” April 1) might cause some people to be concerned about the health of our planet. But there is really no reason to worry. Like any natural system, the Earth has feedback mechanisms that will act to reverse the effects of any harmful changes in the environment. If humanity continues its unbridled burning of fossil fuels, the planet will simply unleash its own version of “antibodies” — fire and flood, drought and catastrophic storms — to reduce or even eliminate the infestation and put things back into balance.

So don’t worry; the planet will be fine. (The human race … well, that’s another matter.)
