No park drilling

While reading the Post-Gazette, my attention was drawn to the article “Deer Lakes Drilling Dispute Awaits County Council’s Vote” (March 19). I learned the astounding news that Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald unveiled an agreement with Range Resources to allow fracking under Deer Lakes Park. Although the county would receive $4.7 million in exchange for the permission to drill, that price will not even begin to make up for the huge mistake Mr. Fitzgerald will create if he goes through with this plan.

Fracking under a public park that is adored by young and elderly citizens alike will show the county’s lack of compassion for what is best for everyone. In my own community, North Park is a place of serenity for everyone; my high school cross-country team practices there daily in the summer. If North Park were subjected to drilling, we might not have a safe place to run.

My hope is that Mr. Fitzgerald makes the correct, moral decision for everyone.
