Rise and shine

I read the statistic three times to be certain I wasn’t misreading it, that the truancy rate in the Wilkinsburg School District last year was at 57.4 percent rising this year to 76.2 percent (“Truancy Reaches Epidemic Levels in Wilkinsburg,” Feb. 22). Really? With McKeesport High trailing at 53 percent, wow, I am shocked that any district administration and school board would not take steps to address this issue immediately by hiring an attendance officer.

Mostly I am aghast that any parent would not take measures to get their kids up and off to school each day. Parents have a personal responsibility to see that their children are educated so they can read, graduate from high school, find jobs and participate in vocational training or attend college. Black, white, single parents, unemployed, overworked parents and caregivers, there are no excuses; get your kids out of bed, dressed, down to the bus stop and off to school! No amount of money will make any school district and its students successful if they are not in school; teachers can’t teach and students can’t learn.

Parents, buy an alarm clock for you and your kids. It’s called personal responsibility!
