Taxi non-service

Regarding “Companies Push for Rule Against Ride Sharing Drivers” (Feb. 13): This is a great peeve of mine — lack of taxi service in this town, much less reliable taxi service. There are two ride-sharing services trying to set up locally (Lyft and Uber) and, of course, the local taxi non-services want to protect their monopoly on cherry-picking fares in this town.

Please do not limit alternate public transportation options. It is atrocious that we cannot call a cab and be assured a ride when we need one in this city. Together with a wholly unsatisfactory bus system, we are situated as though we live in a Third World village rather than a U.S. city.

The current cab companies should have absolutely no advantage or protection at least until they provide guaranteed citywide service, if then, since competition is the surest way to get the best service at the lowest price.
