I have been feeling very sad about Officer Rocco, and very sorry for his handler, Officer Phil Lerza. I know that my sentiments have been shared by most in the county.
I wondered, though, why we all felt so strongly about Rocco — more strongly, perhaps, than for any other local killing.
I think it was because Officer Rocco was a public employee. And he was relatively inexpensive; qualified for his job; performed his job well; was brave, steadfast and loyal; was confident; was discreet and was honest.
We value those rare qualities.
