In solidarity

I feel moved to do something on Dec. 28, the day 1.3 million of the U.S. unemployed will be unceremoniously kicked off their meager weekly unemployment compensation checks or autodeposits.

I’m thinking something far more symbolic than significant. I think I want to fast on Dec. 28 — no solid food, just maybe some water and maybe a few sips of V-8 juice. Hey, I can’t be so weak that I can’t watch TV. If anyone cares to join me in fast and in spirit in this, let me know, please, and we can be together, unified in spirit on that day. I’m writing this letter in hopes of getting this wildfire going and spreading it all the way from my recliner in the family room (I’m on it now) to at least the street outside. Let me know if you are in, so maybe I can get a preliminary head count.

We can change the world, rearrange the world; it’s dying to get better. I’ve been in touch with the local food bank and the nun who runs my parish’s social services, so maybe I can do something actually helpful, too.
