Don’t keep troops in Afghanistan beyond 2014

The headline on the front page of the Nov. 21 Post-Gazette was astounding: “U.S., Afghanistan Reach Security Pact.” Can you believe that Secretary of State John Kerry announced a bilateral agreement that would allow for a lasting U.S. troop presence through 2024 and set the stage for billions of dollars of international assistance to keep flowing to the Kabul government? The corrupt Kabul government, I might add.

How many of those billions will be U.S. taxpayer dollars? And this when our cities are crowded with an unconscionable number of homeless. To say nothing of the fact that our U.S. House of Representatives cannot find the courage to pass an adequate Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program bill to feed our hungry citizens.

Have we not done enough for the people of Afghanistan in 12 years in lives spent and treasure sacrificed? Enough is enough. Can we not leave the Afghans to their own devices after 2014 as the president has promised?
