The force of law

I have written to my Pennsylvania state senator and representative to strongly encourage them to help enact legislation that would prohibit UPMC from refusing to negotiate with Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. I find UPMC’s conduct to be in violation of the public trust and good will required of a charitable organization.

UPMC must consider the thousands of donors (myself included) who have helped it build a health care system that all Pennsylvanians are proud of. Many of these same donors face being barred from using the hospitals they helped fund, because UPMC refuses to negotiate!

UPMC hospitals are not-for-profit private enterprises; they are charitable institutions built with the help of donors, philanthropists and Pennsylvania tax dollars. All Pennsylvania citizens and their elected officials must do what they can to ensure that UPMC and Highmark negotiate with each other in good faith.
