I would like to make a comment on the Nov. 11 editorial “Locked on Success: Congress Is Poised to Help Aging Locks and Dams.”
What about the locks and dams on the Allegheny River? As a recreational boater on the Allegheny, I read with interest this editorial about Congress’ approval of the Water Resources Reform Development Act, which may bring assistance to Western Pennsylvania’s aging locks and dams on the Monongahela.
I applaud the decision to pass this bill; however, our marina resides on the Allegheny River between locks 6 and 7, which are closed to recreational boaters. We are now on the Allegheny “Lake.” Congress needs to fund the dollars to open our Allegheny River Locks 9, 8, 7 and 6.
The riverside economies are being hurt by recreational boaters being prevented from traveling to East Brady and to Pittsburgh. I wonder, what would automobile drivers say if a road that they needed was only open to trucks?
