Bridget Kurt from Georgia is unhappy with our new pope (“Catholics on Right in U.S. Feeling Ignored,” Nov. 10). She indicates that she had received a prayer card with the picture of our new Pope Francis from her church, which she displayed on her refrigerator with her other favorite saints. The article went on to say she is very active in the church and a stalwart in her church’s anti-abortion movement and very fond of our last two popes, whose beliefs were much more to her liking.

Because the new pope has elected to desensitize some of the hot-button issues of the church, Ms. Kurt has elected to discard the pope’s picture into the trash because she and the conservative right feel that they have been thrown under the bus.

The opinions and actions of Ms. Kurt are reminiscent of what happened to our country when Congress last month shut down our government. Could it be that the Catholic Church will be the next institution to be shut down in this country by the right?
