Now in the second week of the government shutdown, the Republicans have moved on from their hysteria about the Affordable Care Act and now just want to "negotiate," about anything it seems. Now they want to talk. Never mind that the last many months, they refused to talk about anything and whiled away the time passing 42 different bills to repeal Obamacare. Oh, they actually did pass a farm bill, callously stripped of the food stamp provisions.
The House Republicans don't want to be disrespected. Funny thing about respect. It can't be demanded at gunpoint; it must be earned. So instead of caving to the demands of the extreme wing of the party, John Boehner could put a bill up to reopen the government, which would pass because enough Republicans would join Democrats to vote for it. But he refuses to call for a vote, because he is cowed by his extremist members.
Want respect? Try some courage, try some statesmanship. Call for the vote and end this thing.
