America ill-served

Shutting down the government is about a lot more than the Affordable Care Act. Along with 800,000 other federal employees, my mother will go without pay until the budget is passed. That is unacceptable.

By causing the furlough, the House Republicans risked setting back projects such as the Department of Agriculture's Women, Infants and Children program, the Centers for Disease Control flu prevention program and Head Start programs across the nation.

The massive amount of inefficiency and setback that is being created leaves Americans at a disadvantage in the global marketplace and here at home as well. Museums and national parks across the country are closed. Yosemite National Park, a symbol of American progressivism and conservation foresight, was closed for its 123rd birthday.

The Republicans' petty plan to postpone the passage of the budget does not serve their constituents. The government shutdown is not a game for House Republicans to play. Enough is enough.
