A caring academia

I am a former student of Margaret Mary Vojtko and was sad to read of her passing ("Death of an Adjunct," Sept. 18 Perspectives). As a college teacher, I feel a certain kinship with Ms. Vojtko.

Ms. Vojtko's life has become part of a debate about professional politics. I believe that her virtues should not be lost in this debate. She was precise and hard-working. I think the fact that she was still working a difficult job at her age speaks for itself.

Today, I just want to share the opinion that we academics can tenaciously pursue scholarly quality, teach our students well and still redouble our efforts to care for our fellows.
