What about the rights of all the victims of gun violence?

I am incensed over the failure of Congress to pass any measures regarding gun control. How could they ignore the pleas of families of Newtown, Conn., who are experiencing profound grief? How could they ignore the incident that has so dramatically changed former congresswoman Gabby Giffords' life? How could they ignore what the majority of Americans are supporting?

These senseless episodes continue to threaten Americans everywhere, including Washington. After the Newtown tragedy, Sens. Joe Manchin and Pat Toomey demonstrated courage and diligence in an effort to introduce legislation that would implement some measures of gun control, all to no avail.

While those in favor of gun control cite the Second Amendment as their right to bear arms (including assault weapons), what about the rights of innocent victims to "certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness"?

It would be of great interest to the public to see which congressmen are receiving money from the gun lobby and how much each of them is receiving. Why should the National Rifle Association be calling the shots? This is one more example of the polarization of our political system and politicians' inability to be effective!
