A limited discussion

Thanks to those who responded to my Forum article in the Post-Gazette ("When Two Become One," Sept. 15). My article was written in the context of discussing same-sex marriage in response to an earlier article by Rabbi Aaron Bisno.

I want to make it clear that the focus of my article was on the two main tenets of Catholic belief on marriage -- the loving relationship between a man and a woman and openness to new life. Clearly, what I did not but could not address within the limitations of space and subject were married men and women who cannot have children, or those wonderful married couples who adopt. I would never slight them in any way and I apologize if anyone believed that I had such an intention. That would never be the case.

Thanks to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for printing the article and to the readers who reflected on it. Another reason why I so much love Pittsburghers and why I am so delighted to be one of them.
