Must be condemned

Patients in pain should always receive relief from suffering through effective pain management. As a native Pennsylvanian, I am well aware that we baby boomers here have many opportunities to advocate for this for our aging parents now and in the years ahead.

But that's really not Gwen Fitzgerald's objective ("Boomers, Beware: Pennsylvania Has No Business Butting Into How You Care for Your Dying Parents," Sept. 1 Forum). She represents an out-of-state group, "Compassion & Choices," which is really a rebranding of the old Hemlock Society. This organization preys upon the vulnerable by promoting the legalization of doctor-prescribed suicide.

They got this passed in Oregon and the results show that people there request these lethal prescriptions because they are depressed and afraid. Research shows that not one single Oregonian planned to commit suicide because he or she was in pain.

As the World Medical Association states, "Physician-assisted suicide, like euthanasia, is unethical and must be condemned by the medical profession."
