Mission Readiness

I agree with the points made in an Aug. 12 article about evaluating teachers ("Pittsburgh Teacher Evaluations Have Promise, School Group Says").

I am part of Mission Readiness, an advocacy group of retired senior military leaders who are convinced that we must improve childhood education and fitness because three-quarters of our young adults today lack the minimum mental or physical qualifications to serve in our armed forces. Our nation evaluates and rewards excellent performance by military service members, health care providers and others whose work is critical for our welfare and security. Our educators are equally important for the security of our future and merit the same recognition.

I believe Pittsburgh's efforts to attract top teachers and support their growth must stay on track to help our students reach their full potential. Our future depends on it.
