Papal popularity

America today is obsessed with social networking sites, reality shows, tweeters, rockers and rappers. And we seem to measure our success by the sheer number of people who know us, and "like" us.

Then along comes a man of God who is known for making humble choices in areas like residency, attire and transportation, and about 3 million people turn out to see him.

Pope Francis obviously knows that living a simple life can go a long way toward alleviating suffering and sowing peace. If we all simplified our lives and shared a little more, we might see less crime, war and deprivation all over the world.

And so, a bold and gentle man who disdains the "cult of personality" turns out to be the most exalted one among us.

Is anyone really surprised?
