While attending the Three Rivers Regatta, I got to wondering why it was necessary to have Pittsburgh police dressed in full battle gear as though they were patrolling the streets of Kabul. Is this really necessary to protect a bunch of yinzers on a hot sunny day?
The image of the police, and perhaps their effectiveness, would be greatly enhanced if they were to dress normally, in short-sleeve shirts, shorts, ball cap and a radio. Why not a less combat-ready unit to work these kinds of community events? Surely a more heavily armed backup team could be called should the need arise.
