Toomey's new issue

Sens. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., were complimented for their support of a popular amendment for firearm background checks that recently failed in the U.S. Senate. While Sen. Manchin has vowed to fight on, our senator buckles to the pressure of the gun lobby, abandoning his position on background checks -- what 90 percent of all Pennsylvanians favor.

He's previously stated, "My idea of gun control is a steady aim." He attempted to redeem himself from such irresponsible comments by voting for the highly popular background check amendment, but lost his resolve to see it through when it got politically tough to do so.

Now, Sen. Toomey states that he wants to "move on" to "other issues." One of these "other issues" is to attack working families. In a recent letter to Pennsylvanians, he solicits financial support for the ultraconservative Commonwealth Foundation's (of which Mr. Toomey was on the board) "Project Goliath": an initiative to stop the "union Goliath" and dismantle the right of working families to organize because the union's "goal is to kill you."

Sen. Toomey flip-flops on his support for universal background checks to pursue radical policies pleasing to his political base. That's not leadership.

Sen. Toomey should be fighting for the people who sent him to Washington, not fighting the people on background checks or workers' rights.
