Rules and politics

Why would Tea Party organizations be eligible for tax-exempt status when the Democratic and Republican parties are not? When I donate to the political party of my choice, I do not get a tax exemption for that donation. What constitutes eligibility for tax exemption? Are PACs tax exempt, too?

While the Internal Revenue Service should not target anyone for political reasons, it does have an obligation to verify eligibility for tax-exempt status. Just asking.
