Bike lane progress

I strongly support the painting of the bike lanes on Liberty Avenue as described in the May 6 article "Pittsburgh Tests Green Paint for Liberty Avenue Bike Lanes." Green bike lanes greatly improve the visibility of the bike lane and raise awareness of cyclists using the lanes. They also remind drivers that there are cyclists on the roads, even off of Liberty Avenue.

Cycling is increasing in popularity and, with temperatures rising, more and more cyclists are hitting the road. A Princeton survey found that between 2000 and 2010, commuting by bicycle increased 43 percent. The survey also found that 83 percent of respondents support maintaining or increasing federal funding of bike lanes and bike paths.

Anything that raises awareness of cyclists and helps drivers take notice of their presence on the road benefits the bicycling community as a whole.

As an avid cyclist who has had numerous close calls with vehicles, I'm glad to see the city doing something for cyclists.

Hopefully these bike lanes will lead to further bicycling infrastructure improvements in Pittsburgh.
