Repealing the medical device tax will save jobs and innovation

Washington, D.C., has long been synonymous with gridlock. But when Democratic Sen. Robert P. Casey Jr. and GOP Sen. Patrick J. Toomey voted last month to repeal a 2.3 percent medical device tax, they proved that Pennsylvania lawmakers can still set aside party politics and serve the greater good.

Our lawmakers joined with 77 other senators (a four out of five majority) to ask for the repeal of a new tax on medical devices sold in the United States. This tax hurts job creation at our 190-employee manufacturing and medical device research facility in Vandergrift. It brings our nation's most innovative industry thousands of layoffs at a time when family-sustaining jobs are badly needed. It takes tax rates to nearly 70 percent of earnings -- or worse! In the future, patients will be harmed because the funding intended for research and development of breakthrough medical devices is being redirected to a tax.

This tax brings harm to our company and its homegrown hard-working associates, who day in and day out create medical devices that reduce suffering, improve patient outcomes and save lives of patients worldwide.

I am proud of Sens. Casey and Toomey for their votes for repeal. I hope that the rest of Washington, D.C., can embrace their leadership, put partisanship aside and kill this tax before any more damage is done to our nation's most innovative industry.
