UPMC's Promise

As director of the organization that would not exist were it not for UPMC, The Pittsburgh Promise, I'd like to add perspective to the headlines about UPMC's contributions and obligations to Pittsburgh and the region.

In 2007, our city embarked upon transforming the quality of education and life in our schools and neighborhoods, and launched The Pittsburgh Promise scholarship program. UPMC committed $100 million to this initiative. Other foundations, companies and individuals added their resources to the mix.

Today more kids are graduating and more of them are succeeding in college and work. We have supported 3,800 youth and invested more than $30 million in their higher education. We could not have done this without UPMC.

UPMC deserves much credit for seeing the big idea that the Promise represents for our region. In addition to financial resources, UPMC is involved with our students by mentoring them, providing internships and, for several, giving them jobs.

In this city of bridges we have demonstrated that renaissance happens when we commit to work together, when we build bridges toward each other because we recognize that it is the only way to get big things done. This requires labor and management of all sizes, businesses and non-profits of all shapes, governments and political parties of all stripes, and neighbors and communities of all ethnicities.

As the debate continues over financial obligations for non-profits, I hope that we remain enlightened about the magnitude of involvement and commitment by UPMC, to support this big opportunity to better groom our future workforce.
