When justice fails

Regarding the shootings in Webster, N.Y. ("2 Firefighters Fatally Shot in N.Y. Ambush," Dec. 25): Nowhere have I seen it mentioned that it wasn't the guns that killed. It was the judge, parole board and anyone else involved in letting the gunman, William Spengler, out of prison. For any man to commit the heinous crime that he did, killing his 92-year-old grandmother with a hammer, is despicable.

Anyone who would allow a killer with that kind of criminal history out of jail should be put in prison himself. I have to ask who in his right mind would allow this man to go free? There's the true criminal! No wonder our system fails with this kind of mentality.

If Spengler hadn't been left free this wouldn't have happened and these poor firefighters would be alive today. Because of the criminal justice system's irresponsibility, we have had this dire situation and deaths.

I'm not saying that people should have assault rifles either, but people are so quick to judge the guns that they don't go after the real criminal in this case. I say put in prison those who let this man out of prison.
