No substance

I am always willing to listen to arguments from the other side, but Rich Schachte's letter ("The Obama Illusion," Sept. 28) is completely devoid of substance and just a lot of nonspecific rantings. I'm surprised it was published; probably even ink is expensive these days. Perhaps people who read his letter will realize the vacuous nature of the Republican mentality and be motivated to get to the polls to vote Democratic.

Possibly during his second term, President Barack Obama can pass some of the needed legislation such as the jobs bill, which was blocked because, as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell famously avowed, the prime objective of this Congress was to see Mr. Obama be a one-term president. After all, it must be convenient now for them to be able to decry the high unemployment rate just before the election.

I wonder if President George W. Bush's two wars and simultaneous tax cuts were a brilliantly farsighted and perspicacious plan so the Republicans can now complain about the deficit under Mr. Obama. How were we supposed to pay for those things anyway?
