Deserving of honor

I was enamored by your article about Dr. Thomas Starzl ("Starzl's Transplant Work Awarded," Sept. 11). If it were not for him, his team and their research, my mother would not have lived 21-plus years after a double-organ transplant, with a liver and small intestine, back in 1990.

I'm very happy he is being distinguished with this honor and I truly hope that those who have been under him, specifically Dr. Kareem Abu-Elmagd, take pride in what they do.

My mother being able to survive was all in their hands, and it worked to perfection. Thank you, Dr. Starzl, for being so bold.
