Inspired by the article by Monica Disare, "City, County Food Deserts Located," Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, June 10, 2013

There are deserts on the Appalachian Plateau

Deserts not classified by Koppen but known to Tuan

"landscapes of fear"

pockets of isolation

neighbor-less neighborhoods

where hunger

loneliness and

pain

go unseen by many

The gently rolling hills ... pastoral bliss

The commercial riverfronts ... such promise

Hidden are the deserts where people are living in quiet desperation

Seek out an oasis
