Sever UPMC ties

Recent letters make good points about UPMC’s propaganda and monopolistic strategies. They made me think further regarding UPMC’s:

1. Arguments with the city over taxable property;

2. Conflict with workers over low pay and poor working conditions;

3. Ongoing battle with Highmark over patient access.

It’s clear to me that despite UPMC’s mission statement, which includes “commitment to the community,” it really has no such commitment. Indeed UPMC’s commitment is to unabashedly enrich CEO Jeffrey Romoff and his minions while running roughshod over the very community they purport to serve.

Therefore, is it not time for the University of Pittsburgh to re-evaluate its partnership with this self-serving enterprise? I suggest that a priority for the new chancellor should be to clearly separate the university from UPMC and insist that UPMC cease and desist from using “University of Pittsburgh” in its name.
