Pity the addict

I must disagree with the Jan. 30 letter writer who claimed that all the blame for addiction rests solely upon the decisions of addicts who use illegal drugs (“Blame Drug Users”). In fact, some people have addictive personality traits or features of their biochemical body makeups that make them more vulnerable and susceptible to addiction than other people are.

The misuse of drugs can cause chemical alterations in people’s brains which make them experience an intense need for illegal drugs. A person cannot “Just say no!” to drugs once he has become addicted.

Drug addicts should be pitied, not condemned. It isn’t easy to give up smoking or alcohol or overeating, nor is it an easy matter for an addict to give up drugs.
