Not ‘just a dog’

The death of Pittsburgh Police K-9 Officer Rocco was heartbreaking. I along with the city of Pittsburgh prayed that Rocco would pull through. But, unfortunately, he succumbed to the severe injuries. Rocco died a hero. He put his life on the line each and every day the same as a human police officer. Which is why I can’t understand some of the ignorant, disrespectful and uneducated comments on social media!

To refer to Rocco as “just a dumb dog” or to say “people are dying of heroin overdoses in Pittsburgh, [so] who cares about this dog” is appalling. What happened to humanity? People now lack empathy and respect for living, breathing creatures?

The person who killed Rocco deserves to be locked away for a long time. I guess those people disrespecting the police force forget that the suspect is a convicted sex offender.

My heart goes out to Officer Phil Lerza on the loss of his best friend and companion. Also, I want to say thank you to the men and women in blue who put their lives on the line every day to protect us. There is no such thing as “just a dog.” And whoever thinks that does not deserve to have the unconditional love and loyalty a dog has to offer.

RIP, Rocco. You will always be remembered as a hero.
