When members of the Evans City Sportsman Club wanted to expand their rifle range and add a handgun and muzzleloader range, the veteran wing shooter in charge drew a bead on the problem and solved it.
That's how club members recall former president Robert "Briz" Brizendine of Chicora, who died Sunday at Butler Memorial Hospital in the presence of his family. He was 71.
Mr. Brizendine, son of the late Robert and Billie Brizendine, served in the Navy on the USS Preble. When his military service was complete, he and his wife, Judy Ziegler Brizendine, owned and operated Ziegler's Exxon gas station in Zelienople. After selling the business, he worked at Traco Inc. in Cranberry.
Mr. Brizendine was active in several clubs, including American Legion Post 642 in Chicora and the Seneca Valley Quarterback Club, where he helped to provide lighting for the Raiders' football field.
An active outdoorsman, he hunted, fished, hiked, raced stock cars and shot trap and skeet. Mr. Brizendine volunteered for the state Game Commission as a hunter-trapper safety course instructor.
He was a member of the Happy Hunters Sportsman's Club, Butler County Trap League, PA Snowseekers Snowmobile Club and the 600-member Evans City Sportsman Club, where he served an unusually long and productive tenure as president from 1992 to 2001.
"He was a good shot," said club director Drew Schoeffel, of Evans City. "I can remember him shooting at trap practice on Sundays -- he always seemed to be there. He did a good job as president and kept getting re-elected. People liked him."
After retiring, the Brizendines bought a house near a state game land where he could be closer to the areas where he liked to hunt and fish.
Mr. Brizendine is survived by his wife of 53 years; daughters Jody Gertz of Harrisville and Wendy Frederick of Evans City; and sisters Barb Brizendine of Zelienople, Susan Altemus of Harmony and Diane Sweet of Aurora, Colo.
Friends and relatives will be received 4 to 8 p.m. today at Steighner Funeral Home, 111 E. Slippery Rock St., Chicora.obituaries
