Obituary: Frank 'Sonny' Dallas / Jazz bassist and educator

Frank Dallas, a well-known jazz bassist and educator, died Sunday at Long Island's Brookhaven Memorial Hospital from heart failure. He was 75.

Mr. Dallas grew up in Rankin, played jazz and was a vocalist in the area.

Early in his career, Mr. Dallas performed in groups led by Charlie Spivak, Ray Eberle and Claude Thornhill.

After moving to New York in the early 1950s, Mr. Dallas worked with jazz greats Zoot Sims, Phil Woods, Elvin Jones and others. Mr. Dallas performed on Lee Konitz's classic albums "Motion" and "You and Lee."

When Mr. Dallas wasn't performing, he taught at Dowling and Suffolk colleges on Long Island.

Mr. Dallas is survived by his wife, Theresa Dallas of Shirley, N.Y.; two daughters, Deborah Marko of North Braddock and Elizabeth Dallas of New York; a son, Robert Dallas of Maryland; and a brother, Joe Dallas of Wilkins.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. tomorrow at Roma Funeral Home in Shirley, N.Y.
