Obituary: Donald 'Tim' O'Connor / Brother of city councilman

Monday, December 24, 2001

Donald "Tim" O'Connor, brother of city councilman Bob O'Connor, died yesterday morning in Las Vegas. Mr. O'Connor, who had been ill for several years with lung cancer, was 55.

Mr. O'Connor started adult life as a steelworker at Jones & Laughlin Mill in Hazelwood, but left for Las Vegas in 1970, where he bought and owned three bars and became a successful real estate investor.

"He invested in a piece of property; it was like investing in Monroeville when there was no Monroeville," said Bob O'Connor.

His bars -- Norene's, This Is It, and Tim O's -- were known as hang-outs for Pittsburghers in the Las Vegas area.

"There wasn't a week that would go by when someone would call and say, 'Hey, what's your brother's number? I'm going to Las Vegas.'"

Bob O'Connor said his brother always kept an eye on his home city, especially on the Steelers.

"He and I went to all their Super Bowls," said his brother. "We were hoping to go to another one."

Mr. O'Connor is survived by his son Sean, 25, and daughter, Kari, 22, both of Las Vegas. His wife Norene died four years ago.

Funeral arrangements have not been set, but a service is planned in Las Vegas on Friday. The Rev. Terry O'Connor, Bob O'Connor's son who was ordained in May, will officiate.
