They make you wonder
where the inspiration and energy come from. This years 10 All-Star Achievers
represent the best in high school seniors in Washington and Greene counties and the Mon
Valley, and reflect a wide range of accomplishment in academics, talent and community
service.
This years all-stars, chosen from among 47 nominees, will attend Princeton and
Cornell universities and the University of Pennsylvania among other local and national
schools.
In all, 70 seniors from the region were named winners and all of them will be
recognized at a May 4 reception.

Lauren A. Barletta
McGuffey
As a top student, athlete, musician and volunteer, Lauren has met with success.
Shes an accomplished pianist, plays clarinet and has taught dance. She lettered in
track and field, serves as captain of the cheerleaders and the math team, and has done
biological research. An ordained church deacon, she also has posted more than 1,000 hours
of community service.

Erin Elizabeth Bitz
McGuffey
First in her class, Erin attended the Governors School for the Sciences, lived in
Mexico for a year with her family and spent a two-week church mission in Venezuela.
Shes an all-star volleyball player. In seventh grade, she started a paper-recycling
drive which now includes most of the district and has recycled 30,000 pounds of paper. Her
goal is to be an astronaut.

Jamie Bowman
Canon-McMillan
When Jamie was 12, her mother took ill, forcing Jamie to run the household for three
years. She has done volunteer work at Western Center, tutors, and does clerical work for
the school nurse. She is co-captain of the cheerleaders and president of the Black
Awareness Club. Jamie also is a model, actress and dancer who choreographed a fashion
show.

J.S. Chambers
Trinity
A National Merit finalist, Jonathan ranks first in his class and placed 10th in state
Math League finals. He attended the Governors School for the Sciences, co-founded a
Bible club and did volunteer work at Washington Hospital. Hes an all-star cast
member in a Shakespeare competition, lettered in football, track and cross country and has
done commissioned artwork.

Caleb Dulis
Trinity
A National Merit finalist, Caleb scored 800 in verbal on his SATs. He attended the
Governors School for International Studies. He coached Midget Football and did
charitable work for 10 organizations. Caleb anchors the schools televised morning
show, was a four-year cast member in school plays, competed in Shakespeare competitions
and lettered in football.

Meghan L. Grice
McGuffey
A top student in her class, Meghan chaired the high schools Senior Day of Caring,
leading 140 volunteers for a day. Shes also been a volunteer for 15 agencies. Meghan
has lettered in soccer and cheerleading, traveled to Spain, and served as class president.
She has done 4-H projects for nine years, and played the lead in a school musical.

James Montecalvo
Washington
One teacher described James as "awesome!" He receives top grades, played
football and participated in community service activities while fighting an auto-immune
deficiency and spinal cancer. He is class president and a member of the National Honor
Society. He has volunteered at a food pantry and raised money to help underprivileged
children.

Joshua Kaplan
Peters Township
Joshua was the impetus for the start of cardiopulmonary resuscitation classes in
Peters. He also organized classes, taught by township police officers, for high school
students. He is president of the National Honor Society and was selected to attend the
Governors School for Agricultural Sciences. He will attend Princeton.

Joy Natalie Tsai
Waynesburg
First in her class, Joy is a National Merit semifinalist and attended the
Governors School for the Sciences. She scored a perfect 800 in math on her SATs. Her
accomplishments arent only academic. Joy won first place in a public speaking
competition. The organist for a local church, she also plays the piano for the school
choir. She teaches piano and tutors.

Kaitlin Young
Peters Township
Kaitlin was accepted for the Governors School for Health Care last year, but
attended the national Future Business Leaders of America conference instead. Kaitlin has
won awards for public speaking, foreign language, citizenship and entrepreneurship. She
has lettered in tennis and lacrosse. She co-founded a group that collects books for
underprivileged children.
