The All Star Achievers are the
best of the best. Nominated by their schools and selected by Pittsburgh Post-Gazette staff
members, they are high school students who excel in academics but find time for community
service and extracurricular activities. They are avid learners, leaders in their schools
and willing to work to help others.
Ten students from city schools were selected. In all, 70 seniors from the seven areas
of the region were named winners, and all of them will be recognized at a reception on May
4.
Below is a list of the other city students nominated and brief profiles of the 10
winners from schools in Pittsburgh.

Sonia Surinder Aneja
Shady Side Academy
Sonia has a perfect all-As record achieved taking a course
load that includes several advanced placement classes. Shes the news editor of the
school paper, founded the Students for a Free Tibet chapter at the school, and has twice
won varsity letters in tennis. She volunteered at Magee Hospital Research Institute. Her
guidance counselor describes her as a "complete, balanced student" who is
"confident [and] self-reliant."

Erinn Lynnae Evans
The Ellis School
Erinn is described as a top student who routinely goes beyond what is asked of her.
During the summer, she tutored city students and worked at Magee Womens Hospital
Cyto-Genetics Laboratory. She has played three varsity sports throughout high school, and
was the MVP for lacrosse two times and the field hockey captain this year. "She is an
extraordinary young woman whom we have been lucky to have," wrote her college
counselor.

Ana Mata-Fink
Shady Side Academy
Ana came to Shady Side speaking French, Spanish and English and plunged right into
Chinese. She excelled there and in all other subjects as well. She was elected captain of
the varsity field hockey team, and has worked as a math tutor and participated in the
Students for a Free Tibet chapter. "Ana is one of our most excellent students,"
said her college counselor, "not only in academic terms but also in terms of her
personal character."

FloJaune Griffin
Schenley High School
FloJaune is in the International Baccalaureate program, a rigorous college-level
academic program. She has been active in the Girl Scouts, the Pittsburgh School
Districts African-American Centers for Advanced Studies Council and has worked with
the Medical Explorers Post at the University of Pittsburgh. She is very involved in
activities at her church, where she was named a deacon. She is "a highly motivated,
goal-oriented, self-directed and assertive young woman," wrote her guidance
counselor.

Yuan Yuan Li
The Ellis School
Yuan Yuan is the best science and math student in the Ellis senior class, says a
counselor. She also makes As in AP English, despite growing up speaking Chinese, and
has a singing voice that "moves audiences to tears." Shes volunteered at
Eye and Ear Hospital and is Glee Club president.

Providenza Nicole Loera
Oakland Catholic High School
Providenza founded Oakland Catholics Human Rights Coalition as a forum for
student involvement in human rights issues. Shes a high-honor student who has
volunteered in community service and church activities. One teacher said shes
"a noble spirit, wrapped in a vibrant intellect."

Kerry Murphy
The Ellis School
With an adventuresome spirit, Kerry has studied culture in Ireland, archaeology and
history in Egypt and language and culture in China. Described as a stellar student, she
also is a domestic abuse advocate at a womens shelter, school newspaper editor and a
singer, actress and comedienne.

Amanda Paga
Brashear High School
Amanda, the twin sister of another All-Star Achiever, takes some of the toughest
courses and is ranked fifth in the class. She has lettered in soccer, softball,
basketball, golf and swimming and was All-City Defender in soccer for three years. Her
volunteer work includes teaching classes at Southminister Presbyterian Church and tutoring
French after school at Banksville Elementary. She has worked as a softball umpire, a
lifeguard and a swim instructor.

Nicole Paga
Brashear High School
Nicole, the twin sister of another All-Star Achiever, also takes rigorous courses
and is ranked first in her class. She has taught classes at Southminster Presbyterian
Church and tutored French after school at Banksville Elementary. She has lettered in
soccer, softball, basketball, golf and swimming and was All-City Forward in soccer for
four years and the city champion in golf this year. Nicole also baby-sits and works as a
lifeguard and a swim instructor.

Kostandin Pajcini
Schenley High School
Kosta has a 4.0 unweighted grade point average taking college-prep and
college-level courses. He moved from Albania with only a slight knowledge of English in
1995. He was captain of the schools Science Bowl team this year and has participated
in the Biology Olympiad and Pennsylvania Mock Trial Competition He has played on the
school soccer team and volunteered at St. George Eastern Orthodox Church, Rogers Middle
School and Animal Friends.
