'Star Wars' toys embargoed until May 3

April 17, 1999

By Rob Owen, Post-Gazette TV Editor

MEMO: "Star Wars" blasts back into theaters with the first of three prequels this May. Why wait till then? We're counting down to the premiere of "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" (a.k.a. "Episode 1") with a weekly update.

If you're a collector of "Star Wars" action figures or if you simply remember playing with them as a child, a sneak peek at the newest batch can be found at http://www.sirstevesguide.com/e1/e1f/index.html. Science, Technology & Medicine "Star Wars" guru George Lucas won't allow the deluge of toys associated with "The Phantom Menace" to hit store shelves until May 3 (Toys R Us will open at 12:01 a.m.), but images of the new playthings are all over the Web. Manufacturer Kenner has a site of its own (http://starwars.hasbro.com/) but doesn't offer much in the way of revealing photos. For that you must rely on fan sites.

CHARITY SCREENINGS: Pittsburgh's not on the short list of cities that have a $500 per ticket May 16 charity screening of "Episode 1." The closest places to see the film early are Philadelphia or Washington, D.C. Ticket sales benefit the Big Brother Big Sister Association of Philadelphia (call 215-557-9009 for tickets) or Washington's Children's National Medical Center (call 202-884-5631).
