And now the good news!
By Joe Grata, Post-Gazette Staff Writer
There is some good news to report about driving around Pittsburgh
this construction season:
No
significant repair work involving lane restrictions is scheduled anywhere on Interstates
79 or 279 in Allegheny County this year.
The Parkway West is smooth as home plate at Three Rivers Stadium, the result of
repaving in 1997 and 1998.
The
Parkway East between Monroeville and Churchill has also been repaved within the past two
years. However, repairs to the road surface are continuing between Churchill and Oakland,
work that is restricting the limited-access road to a single lane over many weekends.
Because
traffic from the Fort Duquesne Bridge, the 10th Street Bypass and Fort Duquesne Boulevard
will be unable to go directly to the Fort Pitt Bridge because of the ramp closings, fewer
cars and trucks will be trying to jam onto the Fort Pitt Bridge and through the tunnel at
the same time.
No work
will be done on the main span of the Fort Pitt Bridge or in the Fort Pitt Tunnel
throughout this year, or in 2000 and 2001.
The
northbound half of the I-279/Point State Park portal bridge will be unaffected this
construction season, so motorists coming off the Fort Pitt Bridge to I-279 North, Fort
Duquesne Boulevard and the 10th Street Bypass will have full access.
By the end of June, Route 51 and West Liberty Avenue drivers will be able to use a new
overpass, ramps and traffic patterns designed to alleviate delays at the south end of the
Liberty Tunnel.
After
Memorial Day, rush-hour traffic volumes drop by at least 10 percent because school ends
and summer vacations begin.
