Deadline nears for ideas on how to improve Oakland A great city doesnt neglect its assets. It builds on them, capitalizing on strength as it protects and expands the viability of its future. Oakland is undeniably one of those assets, providing a first impression of Pittsburgh and a second home as well for the thousands of young students attracted here from across the country and globe. How should we improve this university hub? How should we dress up and adorn this second Downtown? What transportation system should connect this cultural and tourism center with the rest of Greater Pittsburgh? Give us your ideas on this topic of vital importance. PG Benchmarks is sponsoring a competition to attract the best notions on how to make Oakland the best place it can be. Were looking for plans and ideas -- from amateurs and professionals. Include drawings and schematics if you like. Or just use words. If possible, be specific. We want that sublime blend of inspiration and practicality that infuses concepts that can go from pencil marks to groundbreaking. And in that regard, the entrants with the best ideas will win an audience with Mayor Murphy and the chance to sell him on the project. If you dont like competitions, view this as a call for community input. All serious submissions will be published in our end-of-the-year Benchmarks on Dec. 26. However, you view it, this is your chance to inject your thoughts on improvement into the minds of your reading neighbors all across Western Pennsylvania. You can never tell where such injections might lead. Time, though, is growing short. The deadline is Dec. 10 for e-mail, which is preferred. E-mail your response to dheuck@post-gazette.com Written or typed letters are also welcome, but, because they must be typed in, the deadline for them is Dec. 3. The mailing address is PG Benchmarks, c/o The Post-Gazette, 34 Blvd. of the Allies, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15222. If you have questions, contact us at 412-263-1479 or by e-mail.
