Dan
Fitzpatrick joined the Post-Gazette in 1998 after working previously for the
Pittsburgh Business Times as well as publications in Missouri and Kansas. At the
Post-Gazette, Fitzpatrick covers commercial real estate, economic development and print
media, as well as writing for PG Benchmarks. He has won awards from the Associated Press,
the Kansas Press Association, the Society of Professional Journalists and the Pittsburgh
Black Media Federation.
Paul Flora is an associate
editor on the Post-Gazettes editorial board. He joined the paper in 1997, after
working nine years as the regional economist at PNC Bank Corp. and several years as a
regional planner in Virginia. Flora holds a bachelors degree in economics from
William & Mary, a masters degree in urban and regional planning from Virginia
Tech and a masters degree in economics from the University of Pittsburgh.
Douglas Heuck is the
Post-Gazettes Benchmarks Editor. He conceived the project in 1995 after eight years
as an investigative reporter for the PG and the Pittsburgh Press. Heuck has penned 12
series on such issues as the homeless, St. Clair Village housing project, welfare reform,
children in city schools and the life of Jonas Salk. He has placed first in three national
journalism competitions and has won numerous state honors including, twice, the G. Richard
Dew Award, the highest recognition given by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers
Association. He has also won three Keystone Distinguished Writing Awards, given annually
for the best newspaper writing in Pennsylvania. Heuck is a graduate of Kenyon College.
Steve Thomas, who designed
the graphics for this section, started work at the Post-Gazette last September. He
graduated from Ohio University with a bachelors of science degree from the School of
Visual Communications specializing in Informational Graphics. In the 1998 College Graphics
Reporting and News Art Competition, he won a first place gold star and an honorable
mention in the passive diagrams category.
Steve Urbanski designed
this section. He joined the Post-Gazette as a page design editor in 1993 after working at
The Pittsburgh Press. He has held various editorial positions at The Sun-Tattler in
Hollywood, Fla., the Dallas Times-Herald, the Uniontown Herald-Standard, the Punxsutawney
Spirit, the Sayre (Pa.) Evening Times and the Grafton (W.Va.) Mountain Statesman. He
received a bachelors in journalism from West Virginia University and a masters
in communication from Duquesne University.
