NEW DELHI -- An Indian court on Saturday sentenced six men to life in prison for the gang rape of a Swiss tourist last March, one of several highly publicized cases that stirred public anger over sexual assaults in India.
The woman, who was 39 at the time, was on an extended bicycle tour in central India with her husband when they were attacked. They were camping in the forest in Madhya Pradesh.
The prosecution said that the victim could not identify the accused because the assault was at night, but that the authorities were able to make the connection using DNA and because the accused had some of the tourists' property in their possession.
The public outcry in India started after the gang rape of a 23-year-old medical student on a moving bus in New Delhi in December. That woman later died.world
