Pittsburgh International Airport will have expanded service to Paris this year and added a new service to Savannah/Hilton Head.
Delta Air Lines announced Monday that its seasonal service to Paris will start May 1, nine days earlier than last year, and last a month longer, through Oct. 29. The biggest change is that the airline will offer the flights seven days a week throughout the season instead of just from June through September.
Delta started flights to Paris from Pittsburgh in 2008. Last year was the first time since 2011 that the airline offered any seven-day service and officials at Pittsburgh International are happy with the expansion.
“This flight has proven to be an important economic driver for our region, as well as a huge convenience for leisure travelers,” Christina Cassotis, CEO of the Allegheny County Airport Authority, said in a statement.
Delta spokesman Anthony Black wouldn’t speculate whether the airline might provide year-round service to Paris in the near future but said the growth here “continues to be positive.”
“The evolution of service from Pittsburgh has grown to the point where we feel comfortable increasing the service to meet passengers’ needs,” he said.
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald noted Delta has increased its service several years in a row after federal incentives expired and said it would be “desirable” for the airline to run flights all year.
“The more options we have for nonstop service, the better it is,” said Mr. Fitzgerald, who has been working with airport officials to get other international flights.
Meanwhile, Allegiant will announce this morning that it will begin the airport’s only nonstop service to Savannah/Hilton Head.
Allegiant, an ultra-low-cost airline, will fly to the new destination twice a week beginning April 14. Through Wednesday only, it will offer one-way flights for as low as $39 for travel by Aug. 16 with some restrictions, including payment by a debit card.
Allegiant already provides nonstop service from Pittsburgh to Myrtle Beach, New Orleans and five destinations in Florida: Jacksonville, Orlando/Sanford, Punta Gorda/Fort Myers, St. Petersburg/Clearwater and West Palm Beach.
