Powerful thunderstorms that swept through Pennsylvania have left about 34,000 customers without power and forced the cancellation of fireworks displays Thursday night.

About 64,000 PECO customers are in the dark in the Philadelphia area, and PPL Electric Utilities reports more than 2,300 of its customers have lost power, widely scattered throughout central and eastern Pennsylvania. First Energy is reporting more than 1,600 customers without electricity.

At its peak, nearly 171,000 utility customers had no power.
