Dick Hess, Pa. House Transportation Commmittee chairman, dies

HARRISBURG -- State Rep. Dick Hess, chairman of the House Transportation Committee and a state lawmaker since 1987, died today at UPMC Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh due to complications from recent leg surgery.

Mr. Hess, R-Bedford, "died peacefully surrounded by family," according to a statement from Speaker of the House Sam Smith. He was 74.

Before being elected to the General Assembly, Mr. Hess served as Bedford County's prothonotary and clerk of courts.

He began his career in public service in 1965, as chief clerk to the Bedford County Commissioners.

Funeral and other arrangements are being finalized.
