Paul Edward Bezeck did not stop caring for his students once they left his class. His kindness and dedication as an educator, servant of his church, and friend to many extended well beyond the end of the school day.
Mr. Bezeck died Saturday. He was 66.
Mr. Bezeck was born on Oct. 23, 1947, to the late Peter and Mary Bezeck. He was raised in McKeesport and lived there most of his life.
A graduate of Serra Catholic High School, Mr. Bezeck continued his education at Slippery Rock University before receiving his master's degree in elementary education from the University of Pittsburgh.
Mr. Bezeck was an elementary school gym teacher in the McKeesport Area School District for more than 30 years. He was also an active servant within the First Evangelical Free Church.
"He did a lot of work in the children's ministry programs," said Laurie Bezeck, Mr. Bezeck's wife. "He loved working with the kids, and they were always very excited to see him."
Kristen Davis, public relations and communications specialist for McKeesport Area School District, had Mr. Bezeck as a teacher and saw his impact in the community.
"The parents were always very impressed with him," Ms. Davis said. "Every time they would see him they would say he asked them personally about their children and remembered all of them by name."
Mr. Bezeck also kept up with his students' success in athletics.
"He was an avid local sports fan," Ms. Davis said. "He would always follow the local athletes and see how they were doing."
"He was a great encourager to help kids get involved in sports," Ms. Bezeck said.
Aside from his time working for his church and school district, Mr. Bezeck enjoyed golfing and running, as well as helping others as a handyman.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Bezeck is survived by his two children, Jacob and Stephanie.
Visitation will take place from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Jaycox-Jaworski Funeral Home, 2703 O'Neil Blvd., McKeesport. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Evangelical Free Church.
