Over three decades, Margaret Bennett delighted audiences at the biannual musical fundraiser for the Child Health Association of Sewickley with her amazing voice, stage presence and comedic timing.

"She was very funny and had a great sense of humor," said Frank W. Bennett, her husband of 52 years.

"Everybody always looked forward to her performing," he said.

But the gusto she brought to the stage was nothing compared to the selfless off-stage dedication she put into helping the association, a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization involved in charitable giving and volunteer service to help the quality of life of Western Pennsylvania children.

Moreover, Marge, as she was known, was an active volunteer and member of the Sewickley Music Club, the Village Garden Club, the Junior League, the Allegheny Country Club and the Edgeworth Club.

"She was a very caring person," Mr. Bennett said. "Whenever somebody needed someone to help out on anything she always was willing to step forward and do that."

Mrs. Bennett, 76, of Sewickley died Tuesday in UPMC Mercy after an illness of several months.

She was born April 7, 1937, in Chicago. She earned a degree in journalism from Northwestern University in 1960 and worked for about a year in the advertising department of the Spiegel catalogue in Chicago. She was a member of St. James Church in Sewickley.

For 24 years, Mrs. Bennett helped care for her mother, Mary Gallagher, who lived with the Bennett family until she died in the mid-1990s just before her 100th birthday.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Bennett of Sewickley; two sons, Brian Bennett of Raleigh, N.C., and Michael Bennett of Boston, Mass.; a brother, Francis Gallagher of West Falmouth, Mass.; and five grandchildren.

Friends will be received at Copeland's Funeral Home, 702 Beaver St., Sewickley, today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. James Church. Interment will be in Sewickley Cemetery.
