A Shady Side Academy graduate from Fox Chapel was found dead in his University of Chicago dorm room Saturday, authorities said.

The Cook County medical examiner's office said autopsy results for Nicholas Barnes, 20, are pending toxicology tests.

Officers went to the dorm Saturday when someone reported a bad odor and found Mr. Barnes, who police said may have been there several days. A Chicago police spokesman said the death is under investigation but police don't suspect foul play.

A 2011 graduate of Shady Side Academy, Mr. Barnes grew up in Fox Chapel and was a member of the cross country and speech and debate teams, school spokeswoman Jennifer Roupe said. He also was inducted into the Cum Laude Society, an academic honor society, and recognized as an AP Scholar.

At the University of Chicago, Mr. Barnes was a third-year Germanic studies major, and had studied abroad in Vienna, Austria, Dean of Students Susan Art said in a statement on the school's website.

"Nick will be painfully missed. He was an excellent student, admired by faculty and peers alike," the statement said.

The university is planning a memorial service, and said Mr. Barnes' family will have a funeral service in Pittsburgh.
