Darnell “Jeff” Pope of Plum was in the Pennsylvania spotlight last year when he was tapped as the state’s most outstanding senior volunteer by Home Instead Senior Care agency.
Once again, the 20-year agency that is the world’s largest provider of nonmedical, in-home care for seniors is looking for nominations from the Pittsburgh community for its Salute to Senior Service program, which honors outstanding senior volunteers.
Nominations are open to adults 65 and older who give at least 15 hours a month of their time. People can submit online nominations at salutetoseniorservice.com. They also can print the form from the website and send it to Salute to Senior Service, Box 285, Bellevue, NE 68005 or call 1-866-996-1087. Deadline is Saturday.
Those selected receive $500 for their favorite nonprofit charity and a chance to become a national winner.
Mr. Pope was recognized for stepping up to lead local stroke support groups when the agency that ran them dissolved. Not only did the retired senior field consultant, who suffered a stroke in 2005, ensure the groups continued, he helped those with mobility issues to get to the meetings and provided support when members were hospitalized. He also contributed service to American Legion organizations and Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum.
