The Pittsburgh Public Schools board tonight approved spending $782,802 on about 4,400 intruder locksets for classroom and office doors at school buildings throughout the city.

The locks, which come with door handles, are designed to ensure that classrooms can be locked from the inside while at the same time the doors can be opened from the inside.

The purchase is part of the district's efforts to improve security.
