California: Historian Named Chancellor

Nicholas B. Dirks, Columbia University's executive vice president for arts and sciences and dean of the faculty, has been chosen to be chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley. The Board of Regents will vote this month on the appointment, made by the University of California's president, Mark Yudof. Dr. Dirks, 61, an anthropologist and historian who has written three books on India, would succeed Robert J. Birgeneau.
